Speaking to Dazed, Giorgio Patrini, the company’s CEO and chief scientist, says: “We haven’t observed DeepNude technology embedded in a chatroom bot before, with its dramatic potential for user accessibility and scale of production. Sensity, a deepfake detection company, published its findings on this issue in October. Some of the photos are believed to depict underage girls. Chat members can make specific requests of the bot in its messaging groups. The ecosystem centres on an AI bot which generates nudes on request, sending galleries of new images to tens of thousands of subscribers each day. The software has been discovered on Telegram, where it has been employed as part of a ‘deepfake ecosystem’, in which over 104,000 fake nudes of women have been created. “The world is not yet ready for DeepNude.”Ī year since, the app has grown expontentially in popularlity and usage. “We don’t want to make money this way,” they wrote in a statement. The app was taken offline just hours later by its creator, with a bizarre backpedal. It cost $50 to download on various app stores. It is described as offering “the superpower you always wanted”, enabling users to upload photos of women (the technology didn’t work on men) which it would then strip and turn into believable fake nudes. But, while some work to make life easier for those with disabilities, or to help end a global pandemic, others are focussed on a less noble cause: abusing and objectifying women.Īn anonymous programmer launched an app called DeepNude last year, which used deepfake technology to remove clothing from photos of women. With the power of technology, the world’s greatest minds have the capability to achieve almost anything.
